What inspires me?
My original inspiration both personally and professionally has been outdoor adventure. When combined with a supportive group climate (and effective reviewing!) the spirit of adventure can create ideal opportunities for learning and development - for all ages! From these 'outdoor' roots in the late 1990's my interests have branched out into many other 'positive' and 'holistic' approaches to learning, both active and creative experiential techniques (basic or advanced).
These techniques:
speed up, clarify and enrich communication about personal and team experiences relating to clarity of vision;
What I contribute to active learning...
Workshops and seminars informed by my experiences as a development trainer and training consultant as well as by my research.
My ideas about facilitation...
Facilitation is about making learning easy. We can do this by...
Enhancing learners' experiences - by raising their awareness levels during experiences and making it easy for them to communicate their experiences during reviews.
Developing learners' own reviewing abilities - initially by encouraging and helping them to reflect on their experiences from a range of different perspectives.
This approach keeps learners centre stage and it focuses on the obvious but essential elements of learning from experience - what learners experience and how learners learn from these experiences. Our job is to make learners experts.
How I started...
In the nineties I initially developed metaphors for learning through both animal behaviour and outdoor facilitation. I attended my first training course in Adventure Experiential Learning in 2000 and qualified as an experiential facilitator. During my MBA studies I developed Power Related Experiential Learning. This method of experiential facilitation combines both soft and strategic business skills. In 2003 I developed a Power Rating methodology that assisted in identifying areas for development and growth in teams. This research showed a common thread of elements that were present in top performing teams, which led to my Theory of Authoritive Power. Authoritive Power is the ability to exert influence in the organization beyond authority, which is derived from position. The team’s Authoritive power could include job knowledge, personal influence, interpersonal skills, and ability to get results, empathetic ability, persuasive ability, and physical strength.
In 2006 I completed a PHD in Human Resource Management and continue providing Authoritive Power programs based on experiential facilitation extensively throughout South Africa. In 2009 I further developed the Theory of Authoritive Power by changing the focus to Kubunye which is the combination of Absolute Certainty and the elements in Authoritive Power.
What I provide and where...
I travel nationally to provide training and consultancy in developing Authoritive power and related skills. There seems to be no limit to the kinds of environment in which people want to develop top performing teams. I enjoy the challenge of developing new ways to adapt and apply these skills in new situations.
